“That time I met Bin Laden”. Salvatore Lombardo (Suiss Umef University) speaks

“It is wrong to say that the Taliban are in control of the country. Massoud’s resistance has just begun but international support…”

“I can say that I saw the Taliban being born” says Salvatore Lombardo, Professor, Director of Political Science at the Suiss Umef University of Geneva, writer, French and Italian because his parents are from Torre del Greco. When it comes to Afghanistan his is an opinion to be held in the highest regard and not only because he has visited the country eleven times but because he has been inside the facts and met the protagonists.

“At the time of the resistance led by General Aoun against the Syrian occupation, I met at the Hotel Alexandre in Beirut, a well-known haunt of spies, traitors and journalists, Osama Bin Laden. He didn’t then have the long beard we learned about later and was escorted by two large bodyguards. I couldn’t imagine who he would become. At the time he was carrying briefcases full of money that funded militias hostile to General Aoun. We knew he was an American agent. From then on they began to develop a plan to retake Afghanistan.”

Salvatore continues in his reconstruction of the seizure of power: “At the beginning of 2000 Commander Massoud warned of the danger of the Taliban, a danger that, as it turned out, would also affect the West (Massoud was assassinated in 2001, ed). He asked European countries and the USA for help, but nobody answered. No one in France received it. Only the then President of the European Parliament Nicole Fontaine, redeeming the honour of the whole France, received him in Strasbourg. I saw him cry because he felt a strong bond with our culture, he felt he was a child of our values but denied them for no reason.

“I remember that he always asked me for books of poetry in French, including some by Jean Moréas, a poet that even the French have forgotten, and books on architecture, especially on Sabbionetta, the ideal city of the Gonzagas. Would a Taliban ever ask for something like that?”.

Certainly, the advance of the Taliban has caught everyone unawares. “They certainly did not emerge from nowhere, also because we are speaking of about 250 thousand people. They were present in the population also before. Only, they did not make themselves known as they do now. And then we cannot forget that former President Ghani did not enjoy respect and esteem, he was perceived as a puppet of the Americans. The army itself had difficulty in recognizing him and it showed”.

Salvatore would like to stress that all is not yet lost in Afghanistan. “The alternative is there. Those who say that the Talibans are now in control of the whole of Afghanistan are wrong – and the western media are doing them a disservice. The legal authority is still with the first of the three vice-premiers who are in Pashir. The former head of the secret service who is now at Ahmad Massoud’s side is also in Pashir. More and more soldiers are joining. These are details not to be underestimated. The resistance is active and should be supported, however, now only India has arrived, which is directly affected by the collapse of the Afghan state given the now clear choice of field of Pakistan, and not even with an army on the ground but only with weapons, which will be useful anyway. Massoud’s appeal is clear: either material aid or, and here Western countries like Italy could be useful, diplomatic aid. The Taliban’s vulnus is precisely international recognition”.
